Smith-King began her career at North Carolina Central University in 1987 as a Project Administrator in the Department of Health Education. She remained in that role until 1992. In 2006, Dr. Smith-King served as a Research Grant Coordinator in the Department of Nursing and subsequent to that role, Smith-King became a member of the Department of Nursing faculty in 2007.
